Have you ever noticed that sometimes your emotions are so strong or muddled or overwhelming that you can’t find the words to express yourself? Or are some experiences or memories so painful, it hurts too much to talk about it? Or maybe you simply don’t know what you’re feeling?
Art is a powerful therapeutic tool that we use sometimes in the journey toward growth and healing. The act of art-making gives us the opportunity to express and accept feelings; to explore our sense of self; to reduce stress and promote relaxation; and to repair what is broken and encourage new growth.
Many people are reluctant to engage in art because they worry they can only draw stick figures, but you do not need to be an artist to participate in therapeutic art! In fact, in counselling, the emphasis is on what you learn about yourself, not what the final product looks like. As your counsellor, I will not interpret or analyze your work; instead, we will talk about what you discovered about yourself through the process of making the artwork. We use of variety of mediums in therapy including paint, pencil, pastels, charcoal, collage, photography, clay, fabric, and many more. Stick figures are entirely welcome!
Creating a piece of art in a non-judgmental environment helps to untangle our emotions and restore a sense of calm in the midst of distress or loss or trauma. The nonverbal language of art is a means of connecting to our inner selves – our thoughts, feelings, and perceptions – and opens the door for reparation and transformative change.
