Loss and Grief Counselling

Loss is a universal human experience, but the way we grieve is different for everyone. At some point in our lives we all feel the sadness, darkness, emptiness, confusion, loneliness, anger, worry, guilt, or isolation that comes with loss, whether it results from the death of a loved one or the loss of some part of ourselves. The journey of grief is unique to each of us, and because we are each on our own paths, there is no simple solution for healing. Grief is intricately tied to the many threads that weave the story of our lives; this makes the grief process rich with complexity, and rich with the potential for growth.

While we certainly grieve the death of a loved one, there are many other losses that equally cause us pain: the end of a relationship; the loss of a job and financial security; a miscarriage; the loss of dreams and hopes; moving away from your community; the loss of independence and/or lifestyle during chronic illness or after an accident; the loss of safety and security after a violent assault; a loved one with advanced dementia.

Often, we are left feeling adrift, alone in our grief. I can offer you a safe space in which you can give voice to your grief, truly feel it, and work toward healing it. In therapy, the intent is that we will move through the many layers of your grief, and together we will search to make sense of your loss and suffering, figure out who you are in the wake of your loss, and find a way to create a new life narrative that integrates acceptance, meaning, and hope.
